Do you guys know about broadcast TV? It turns out that if you have a TV and a $10 antenna (and you live near a population center, I guess), you can get TV for free.
This is a thing that only recently occurred to Dusty and me. We’ve just been watching Netflix, and then on the rare occasion that there’s a sports event we want to watch, we go to a bar. But then at Thanksgiving, my mother-in-law felt strongly that we needed to figure out a way for her to watch the game, and so we hooked up the rabbit ears we had lying around (yeah, why did we have those? I dunno), and lo and behold, the game!
Anyway, I’m telling you this because now that we’ve discovered this one neat trick, we’re suddenly much more interested in football. Or at least we were interested enough to watch the final play-off game that landed the Eagles in the Super Bowl, and we’re definitely interested enough that we’ll have the TV on on Sunday evening. Which means I’m definitely interested in cooking some Super Bowl foods.
From what I understand, this means chili and a bunch of dips and finger foods. Dusty and I keep talking about making chili and still haven’t done it this winter, and I love eating snacks for dinner, so I am a-okay with this tradition. We’re going to make wings (pro tip: combine Torchbearer’s Buffalo Wing sauce with Frank’s Red Hot and melted butter for The.Best.Wings), some kind of chili involving ground beef and cocoa (these are the two essential ingredients as far as I’m concerned, but I guess, you know, beans, onions, maybe some of the chile peppers we froze over the summer!, etc…and smoked cheddar for shredding on top!), and then I’m thinking….watercress sandwiches? We have to work veggies in somehow! Maybe a ricotta spinach dip (‘cept I’d finely chop a small shallot instead of searching for scallions), or maybe something less obvious, like the sweet potato hummus I recently saw a recipe for. I might take a pack of frozen tortillas (20% off!) and do a round of baked tortilla chips (or fried). Or maybe all of it, except I’m a little worried I’ll just spend the whole game cooking and not to get to see any of the ads. I mean, game.
Regardless of what I end up tackling (haha), I’m also happy to report that we have tons of salad greens in this week — which is especially great because if I eat wings, chili, spinach dip, and tortilla chips on Sunday, salad’s probably all I’m going to want to eat for the next several days. Seems totally worth it to me. 🙂
