1/5-1/7/2017: Happy New Year!

Quick things:

Chicken Pot Pie a la Dusty: Village Acres stew hen with carrots, leeks, & more, plus homemade noodles using locally-milled flour!

  1. There will be no fresh bread on Thursday this week — fresh McGrath’s bread arrives 9am on Friday. A variety of frozen loaves from both Talking Breads and McGrath’s are available.
  2. Stew hens from Village Acres Farm made their debut last week. At $9 each, these are great for making big batches for stock, and turning part of it into chicken noodle soup or chicken pot pie.
  3. North Mountain Pastures is currently accepting sign-ups for their next meat CSA season, which begins in February. If you’re looking for a good source of pastured/humanely-raised local meats beyond what’s available at the market, NMP is a great way to go. And they drop off at R&R!
  4. Despite what I said last week, egg sale continues! Joining the winter bounty club is also Apple Valley Creamery grass-fed butter, which is on sale this week for $7/lb (usually $8.50/lb).

Scroll down for the list of what we’ll have this week!

From August through November, one of our greatest challenges at the stand is finding room to display all the goodies coming in from the fields. There is so much abundance during those months that we have to pick and choose what to stock, and because it’s all so beautiful and delicious, we always want to push the limits of what we can reasonably accommodate. The first week of late fall/early winter that sees a reduced selection is almost — not quite, but almost — a relief, because it makes Thursday morning just a little easier when we aren’t constantly rearranging to make room for new items rolling in. (And, if you want the whole truth, it relieves a little bit of tension in our marriage, because I mostly do the ordering and Dusty mostly does the setup, so if there’s more than can be displayed…you know whose fault it is!)

In my head, by this time of year, while there’s still impressive abundance given the conditions outdoors, the variety has dipped to the point that I can stop picking and choosing and just order anything that looks good to me, and we’ll have no trouble fitting it all in. At least that’s what I thought until, after all farmers had emailed me what they had, and the orders had been placed, I started compiling this week’s list and saw just how much was coming in.

Certainly there is less diversity than there would be in August or September — no tomatoes or peppers or cucumbers or…you know…summer foods — but there are *so* many kinds of squash and salad greens and braising greens and alliums and potatoes and roots that we will have no trouble filling the space this week. And really (and really I probably say this too much), these are exactly the things I want to be eating right now — so I guess it’s no wonder that when I take the attitude that I can order whatever I want, we wind up with so much!

I’m being a little flippant here, but the reality is that the bounty of winter never ceases to amaze me. I will admit that as much awe as I feel now, I have some fear that in late March or early April the storage crops will be depleted before the first flush of spring treats arrives — but I suppose this is a fear as old as life, and still, here we are.
