11/3-11/5/2016: Falling back/looking ahead

Quick things:

  • Reminder: Village Acres is offering pasture-raised turkeys for pre-order to be picked up at Radish & Rye the day before Thanksgiving.
  • Our Thanksgiving hours will be 7am-6pm on Tuesday and Wednesday, closed Thanksgiving day, and open again normal hours on Friday (7am-6pm) and Saturday (7am-4pm). I’m probably biased, but I think Thanksgiving is the perfect holiday to go all-out with the local thing.

Scroll down for the list of what we’ll have this week!

For the first time in a while, I’m late getting this list published. I think my excuse is a good one — last night was the City Council Administrative Committee’s second hearing of the proposal to sign a lease agreement with the non-profit Broad Street Market Alliance, and that meeting lasted from 5:30pm until 9pm. It was then followed, for me and several others, by a couple of hours of “debriefing”, weighing options, and discussing potential outcomes. I’m very happy to report that there seem to be no majorly contentious issues, and President Wanda Williams seems committed to getting the lease agreement approved.

2016-11-03_broccoli_img_20161103_161029442_In the meantime, of course, life at the Market rolls on, seemingly busier every week, and time, in general, seems to be flying. Despite having written for the past few weeks about the changing seasons — and seeing and feeling them myself — I was acutely aware this morning of the change in seasons now on display at the stand. Most notably missing are flowers and ripe tomatoes. I’m not complaining — our fresh tomato consumption has dwindled to almost nothing over the past few weeks, as we started gravitating toward potato leek soup, curried pork shoulder, wine braised lamb, roasted squash with pork chops, and other fall treats. Although I’m not really a big broccoli fan, this week the stalks we received are so beautiful that they’re what I’m coveting, steamed to al dente to accompany a long-simmered chuck roast. I’m also thinking about all the things to stuff Delicata squash with, since they don’t store as well or as long as the winter staples like butternut and acorn, and I want to take full advantage of them while they’re here.

I’m also starting to think about our Thanksgiving dinner menu. Dusty and I are hosting for the first time, and though the party will be very small since his parents and my sister will both be out of town, we have big dreams. A Village Acres turkey will be on the table, of course, and hopefully my mom’s amazing Sausage & Celery Root Stuffing (which I believe to be something like this), some sweet potatoes or squash, some mashed potatoes, something green — maybe some steamed broccoli, maybe some collards, maybe even some green beans…I better stop!

Tonight’s dinner is simpler fare — a pizza on a McGrath’s crust, with sauce from our canned Village Acres tomatoes, and a homemade mozzarella experiment, along with whatever veggies Dusty has found in the crisper while I’ve been writing. Maybe not as dream-worthy as Thanksgiving, but I sure am looking forward to it…
